The Real Reason the US Dropped the A-Bomb on Japan : It had nothing to do with defeating Japan, which was ready to surrender after a catastrophic defeat of Tokyo’s 1-million-man army to the Soviets in Manchuria. The US wanted to intimidate the Soviet Union and wanted to preclude a partition of Japan with the Soviets, as had occurred in Germany Frying 200,000 innocent civilians in non-military targets to achieve this seemed like a worthwhile trade-off to Truman and his advisors.
